John would often take off on a bike when at port to take a few pictures of different places he was seeing. Working nights playing with the band on board but days were fascinating trips around the different Islands.

John is on board the Princess Cruise lines currently and playing every night in the show bands. Here are two pictures he recently sent. The above is some gorgeous little condos overlooking the sea. This is on one of the many Island stops he sails too.

And here below on Saint Kitts, he wrote that this is where he loves to swim when they have the time.

Playing on a cruise is a musicians dream. Free food, sail the world, meet lots of people and most of all you play every single night! John loves all those things. He has been hired on cruises for many many years now. Every year he usually goes out for one cruise, when he is not busy in Las Vegas or Oregon.

It does have its burdens, like extremely small quarters that you must share with someone. No windows, low in the ships working area. Sometimes he misses family a lot, as he can not just phone anyone at sea. He must wait to be where there are phone service areas. But all in all, he does love it and loves the new musicians he meets and keeps as friends and contacts.

A new upscale restaurant has opened in Coos bay, featuring seafood and Coastal flair! John played one whole day at the location which features huge windows that look out onto serene landscaping right downtown Coos Bay Oregon. The above photo is John with his Sax and the Restaurant Owner, Ray.

I had the privilege to try out the Prawns in a special sweet sauce and a cup of clam chowder. The owner told me all his equipment is state of the art. NO deep frying! Healthy cooking and safety in mind. There were lots of seating, some nice ocean art from local artists.

A fabulous waitress, Vannie (did I get the spelling right?)was there to take care of me. She was so sweet and attentive! I also found out she lives not far from where John and I live! Small world.

While I was there, I met the owners mother. She had the most interesting story of how she came to America in about 1952 I believe she said. She raised her son right here in Coos Bay and has stayed here. She is from Germany and that day I met her she wore a stylish hat that looked like something one would wear in Berlin! I loved her. Unfortunately I forgot to get picture of her before she left! A beautiful woman.

I hope everyone will go check out the new restaurant and support their desire to be our favorite place to have dinner or lunch. They open at 11am.

After being in there, I would like to see maybe some privacy panels between the window seats for small groups to sit and look out. Break up the openness of the area and provide more intimacy. Otherwise the food was very delicious and I found the waitress, the cook and the owner very likable!

The party began on friday this past weekend. Young Bucks delighted the crowds again, only this was a first for Medford area! They had heard how fun this group was and invited them to their Jazz Festival! Johnny Salzano was there to play the reeds and the festival was the place to be! We were greeted by our own bus shuttle lady and rep, Lennea Clark. She was a excellent host. Always pleasant and so patient with us all. We all received a bag of goodies and lots of appreciation.

We all met for a wonderful breakfast one morning!

I really enjoyed the Kids Hall venue the most. Lots of room , two places for bands to play and food. Very easy to park, and all around the best venue of all. Least fav. was the eagles as it was too small, hot, and poor sound.

Thank you to the Festival managers at Medford, we loved coming down. I do have one complaint. I kept getting in trouble for taking pictures of my own band. What is up with that? We need badges so we can take pictures for our own use of our husbands and band members while playing. I was not recording, just taking pictures for us all.
Otherwise, John and Loved our stay there, and was treated well.

I cannot remember everyones names, but on the left front here is Doug and his lovely wife, Then Brenda in the red (from Florence), Mrs and then Mr Les Engle down on left side. I believe that is Marian Harrington, and her husband way down on the right, (bottom photo-John Salzano is the one with the hat, next to Tom. We had a great time, and So enjoyed everyone's company!!!

John asked to sit in with Gator Beat, one of the top bands for many years,(David Scott here, plays a wicked pennywhistle, saxophone) Great to Dance too! Cajan style!! Be sure and check out their sound CLIPS! and I am sure you will want to buy their music!

John was able to fly down, (and me too!) to play again with this polka band. He has been playing with them at this venue a number of years now. It was very hot outside, around 115 degrees the first day. Thankfully it came down a little at night. John played three days, and showed me around the area a little. There were many people who came out for the beer festival. I had never been to a place where they check your purse every time you go in, and take away your water bottle when you leave. ??

Oh well, I am from small town Coos Bay. ;-)

As usual, John played great. The people danced and laughed. Amazing how many adults love that chicken dance too! Some even bought chicken hats just for the dance! Will put up a short video clip later this week.

John played four days straight at local farmer markets and street fairs in Oregon. Some times it is a battle! Seems there are always one or two people who decide to harass john about playing . Either they dont like the type (jazz ) or they think it was too loud. But 95% LOVE it! he has to be tough to let the water of the few roll off and keep on blowing!

Yes, John needed 22 stitches to repair his upper lip Feb. 14 2010! He was working in the yard, pruning trees, when a limb snapped back and completely sliced his lip in half. Yet here it is March 20th and he just finished playing for THREE bands at the Jazz festival here in Coos Bay Oregon, and last night he played for the Evergreen Court residents with his clarinet. Totally Amazing quality of tone, and God Given talent that this man has for music. Clips will be available soon.

Rocking Sock Hop Benefit

The Young Bucs with Johnny Salzano gave a great Start to the new year with a tribal benefit for the children. A open bid on items was available while the 1950's music rocked on. Many dancers dressed in those fabulous poodle skirts and bobby socks. Some of these dancers come from far away, and as a person who loves to watch, they are as much a hit to see as it is to hear such awesome harmony from the band.

Kelly, the one girl singer did outstanding as usual also. Her voice is unique, clear and full.

John loves to play for the children, and always volunteers for Salvation Army at Christmas time to play for the kettle workers and customers walking by also. John is back in Coos Bay, and has joined a new band while he is there. They recently did a gig for the Coos Bay Transitional home. The names of all the members escape me but the far right is Anthony from the Green Spot, Mary is the lead singer, Keenan On Drums, and the one guy on the left I forgot. Will get back on that. They sounded great! The residents there seemed to have a great time.

John was so happy to play with the Young Bucs this year. Most the gigs were at the mill casino. He also sat in with Gator Beat a few times. We always love Gator beat!!

Stan Mark and the SIn City Suitz

John traveled a lot of jazz festivals for many years with Stan Mark. Well Known Trumpet Lead. John met his wife through this band as they donated their time to give lessons to the Coos Bay Lab Band program. This was a program that helps all kids learn to be a musician and play the old swing, big band songs.

Playing for over 30 years. Born in Rochester New York and a third generation musician. Played with Stan Mark and the Sin Sity Suitz, 8 years, Connie Francis, Freddie Bell, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Rivers, Bobby Blubae, Martha Reeves, Jerry Vale, and many top big bands.
Currently playing on Princess Cruise lines with the show bands, and private organizations. Also, still working in Las Vegas and in Oregon /Washington.
John attended Cal Arts and the University of Las Vegas.

Tenor maddness review of John:
“Salzano’s tone is full-bodied, like tenors from the early period of jazz, with the freedom of Ornette Coleman,” said Phillip Wig, in a review of Salzano’s performance at the Tenor Madness in Las Vegas.

John’s uncle Ben Salzano is listed in New York's history of Jazz as one of those great players of the tenor sax. His dad, Joe Salzano, his brother Joe Jr. also has a great history of rememberable saxophone greats.
